UK woodlands have been disappearing, over many years for agriculture and urbanisation and now make up approx. 2%* of our UK landscape!
Woodlands are a critical and important habitat for biodiversity and is one of the richest habitats for UK wildlife. Planting trees is one of the key solutions for managing climate change and we are all aware of the positive effect’s woodlands have on our wellbeing.
At Top of the Woods we wanted to make a small positive change and give back previous farmland to create new wildlife habitat and to do this with the help of our wonderful guests, by planting a new woodlands as part of our environmental programme.
Out target was to plant 2000 native trees by 2020! And we are super proud we achieved this, one year ahead in 2019! and we are now well on the way to planting 3000 native trees!
How we did it
-
Jon & I initially planted 1300 trees along each of the camping meadows in 2016
-
We committed to planting a tree for every guest who books a stay with us
-
Guests can also sponsor a tree as part of the #Mytree sponsorship programme
We also created a secret living willow garden with local artist Michelle Cain, in the new woodland. The vision was to create an invaluable early food source for pollinating insects and bees coming out of the long welsh winters from the willow pollen and catkins.
Plus as the woodland grew and became established, our guests would discover the secret willow garden, with living green gazebos & willow tunnels to enjoy as part of the holiday stay
#Mytree sponsorship programme
Why not sponsor a tree for each of your kids, come back another year and see who has grown the most, the kids or the trees! or why not ark a special event like a birthday, marriage, engagement, passing your exams or to remember someone who was special in your life.
Or even to say 'I love nature and it rocks!’
