Love is in the air at the stunning, secluded, Pembrokeshire & Cardigan Bay beaches on the doorstep of Top of the Woods our eco luxury glamping and camping site in wild west Wales!
The fresh sea air, the elemental sounds of the waves, and miles and miles of soft, sandy beach inviting you to stroll along hand in hand, there’s just something about being by the sea that shouts romance.
Whatever you love to do as a couple, from wild surfing adventures to relaxing over an intimate picnic feast, there’s a beach for you. Here are our top 6 romantic Pembrokeshire beaches for couples.
1. Surf's up at Newgale Beach
The couple that surfs together stays together, gliding through the waves, the wind in your hair, the salty air... So grab your board and take to the waves with your other half at Newgale Beach.
Facing west onto the Atlantic, Newgale is known as the best surfing spot in Wales with its big, rolling waves. This glorious two-mile sandy beach is also popular with windsurfers, kite surfers, kayakers, and anglers. If you’re a newbie, water sports tuition is available too. Surf's up - what are waiting for?
2. Mwnt - wild swimming
Mwnt Beach, managed by the National Trust, takes couples off to a secluded and sheltered bay tempting them in for a romantic wild swim in the clear, blue waters. After your invigorating dip, you can cuddle up to keep warm. It's also a great beach for dolphin spotting!
Up on the hill, visit a charming white 14th-century chapel, once a welcome sanctuary for sailors, where you can take in the amazing views out across the Irish Sea. Set out a picnic with a view, open a hot flask or something cheekier, and watch the sunset in this dramatic seascape.
3. Newport Beach - romantic walk and cocktails
Head to Newport for a gorgeous walk along the cliffs and the small secluded beach with roaring ocean waves.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite head to The Secret Garden for cocktails and dinner with its enclosed romantic garden and heated pods for al fresco dining for two. Open for drinks and evening meals, the emphasis is on simplicity, with local fresh fish, seafood, meats and salads being the stars. Artichoke ribs, Pembrokeshire lobster, smoked salmon with labneh and sourdough… Our mouth is watering already. Just add a cocktail or two.
4. Ceibwr Beach - Sea Adventures
If you’re an adventure couple, grab your paddle board and explore the myriad of sea caves at Ceibwr Bay, part of the National Trust’s Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park.
A highlight is the famous Pwll-y-wrach, or Witches Caldron, a collapsed sea cave south of the beach where the water transforms to a magical greeny-blue. (The not-so-romantic story is that an old sea witch lives here, ready to eat anyone brave enough to visit her cave!)
Spend time with each other outdoors, breathe the fresh sea air, and take in a whole host of wildlife from fulmars and choughs to seals and dolphins.
If you want your paddleboarding experience all sorted for you (so you can spend more time on romance), check out our Find Your Wild Holidays.
Your paddleboarding experience, accommodation, and food for two nights are all included. Find out more here.
5. Dog-friendly - Poppit Sands
Poppit Sands is a popular choice for couples who can't go anywhere without their pooch. It’s dog-friendly with our fur babies being allowed on much of the beach.
Your dog can get down and dirty, digging and sniffing in the sand, while you can take in the view over a leisurely stroll along the beach, backed by hills and dunes and looking out to the River Teifi. For the perfect romantic moment, you may even spot dolphins, porpoises, seals, or whales.
Treat each other to doughnuts and ice-cream (yes, ice-cream for dogs!) at Crwst Poppit.
(Please note, dogs aren't allowed on the western section from May to September).
6. New Quay trip – Dolphins and Welsh gin tasting
Dolphin-spotting followed by gin-tasting. Can a romantic day out get better than this?
The picturesque village of New Quay (or Cei Newydd) is a picture postcard town set in a secluded harbour. Enjoy soaking up the view and then book a boat trip to discover more about the marine life in the area - especially the stars of the show, dolphins.
A bucket list moment to share with your loved one!
Pop into In the Welsh Wind on the way back for a gin or whisky tasting. What a perfect way to end a romantic day out.
